First and Only Elite Softball Tournament Featuring Unsigned Players
ST. GEORGE, UTAH – July 6, 2011 – The first annual adidas Futures National Softball Tournament will be held in St. George, Utah July 20-24, 2011 at the Canyons Softball complex. The event will be comprised of the best unsigned softball athletes from around the nation. There will be approximately 750 athletes (ages 14-18) on 48 teams competing for the National Title. Players were selected by adidas Futures travel ball coaches via an open tryout process in each of the coach’s territories. The adidas Futures travel ball coaches were selected via an application process.
“The tournament was created to better the recruiting process and open up additional scholarship opportunities for softball players,” said Michelle Delloso, marketing consultant and event founder. “The adidas Futures National Tournament is the first and only elite softball tournament to feature only unsigned softball players which will create a perfect arena for college recruiting.”
The adidas Futures program started as an elite camp in 2006, in which 100 of the best high school softball athletes were selected from regional showcase and national events. These athletes had the ability to showcase their talent in front of college scouts. The camp ran four consecutive years and due to popular demand has grown into a national tournament for 2011. Many of the adidas Futures camp alumni are now at four year colleges on softball scholarships as a result of the camp.
This first year event will also be unique with play taking place from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. This “dusk to dawn” format will help players avoid the summer daytime heat and is a creative way to utilize some of the best softball venues in the country at a time of the year that they generally would not be used. “We are pleased to partner with adidas Futures and the St. George/Washington County area in this new and unique event, which will bring top athletes to Utah generating significant economic impact and exposure to the southern part of the state,” said Jeff Robbins, president & CEO of the Utah Sports Commission.”
SPECIAL EVENTS: adidas and the city of St.George will host an opening welcome dinner for all tournament players July 20, 2011 at the Dixie Center. Hall of Fame Coach and 11-time National Champion Sue Enquist and 4-time NCAA All-American and Olympian Monica Abbott will be the keynote speakers at the welcome dinner.
There will be four adidas Futures all-star games on opening night July 20, 2011 beginning at 9:00 p.m. at the Canyons Complex. Each adidas Futures coach selected players from their team, which have been combined to create eight all-star teams that will compete against one another.
